Dirs. Gualtiero Jacopetti, Franco Prosperi. 1966, 122 mins. This notorious, oft-maligned follow-up to the filmmakers’ surprise international box office hit, Mondo Cane, offers a collagist record of the African continent during moments of transition away from colonialist rule. Though its overriding perspective cannot be separated from that of colonialists, making for an at-times discomfiting viewing experience, it remains an extraordinarily unique document of places, people, politics, and ideology in transformational flux, and stubbornly persists as one of the most impressive and ambitious visual efforts in the history of nonfiction cinema.
