Dir. Hiroyuki Morita. 2002, 75 mins. DCP. English-dubbed (Sat) and in Japanese with English subtitles (Sun). English voice cast: Anne Hathaway, Cary Elwes, Peter Boyle. From Japan’s Studio Ghibli, The Cat Returns conjures an alternate society where cats rule a kingdom, walking upright and speaking like humans. A young schoolgirl, Haru, is introduced to that feline world when she saves a cat from getting hit by a truck. To her amazement, the cat then gets up on its hind legs, brushes itself off, and thanks her very politely. Later that day, the King of Cats shows up in a feline motorcade. In a show of gratitude for saving his son’s life, the king cat showers Haru with gifts – including a large supply of individually wrapped live mice – and decrees that she shall marry the cat prince and come to live in the secret kingdom of cats.
