This triptych about the settling of the American West was an ambitious and sprawling Cinerama epic whose scale and episodic narrative structure served as a kind of template for Kubrick. During the conception of 2001: A Space Odyssey, Kubrick and Clarke privately called their project How the Solar System Was Won.
