DRIVE-IN SCREENING
The Dark Crystal + Time Piece
Queens Drive-In, on the grounds of the New York Hall of Science in Flushing Meadows Corona Park, is located at 47-01 111th Street, Corona, New York 11368
In honor of Jim Henson’s birthday on September 24th, we pay tribute to his work as a visionary filmmaker with two of his most dazzling accomplishments. Featuring a special introduction by Frank Oz. Presented in conjunction with MoMI’s ongoing Jim Henson Exhibition.
Time Piece
Dir. Jim Henson. 1965, 9 mins. With Jim Henson, Enid Cafritz. In this early, puppet-less film by Henson that combines live-action footage with animated effects, Henson stars as a beleaguered “everyman” running from the relentless march of time and the mundane routine of his conventional life. Nominated for an Academy Award for Best Live-Action Short Subject, Time Piece remains fresh today as both a time capsule of 1960s experimental filmmaking, and as a brilliantly conceived and edited example of Henson’s creativity. This recently completed 4K restoration of Time Piece is presented courtesy of The Jim Henson Company.
The Dark Crystal
Dirs. Jim Henson, Frank Oz. 1982, 93 mins. DCP. With Kathy Mullen, Dave Goelz, Steve Whitmire. On a remote planet in the distant past, a Gelfling embarks on a quest to find the missing shard of a magical crystal, which will restore order to his world. Using a mix of puppetry, animatronics, modern special effects, and more, The Dark Crystal creates a sense of visual astonishment and majesty rarely equaled in fantasy filmmaking.
