Get Out
Dir. Jordan Peele. US, 2017, 104 mins. With Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams, Catherine Keener, Bradley Whitford. Masterfully combining elements of horror and satire, Jordan Peele’s brilliant Get Out is about Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya), a young Black photographer who spends the weekend with his white girlfriend, Rose Armitage (Allison Williams) and her affluent family. This first meeting is even stranger than expected as Chris starts to notice bizarre behavior from the estate’s housekeepers and Rose’s family. Once Chris finds out about the Sunken Place, he fights to find a way to get out. Academy Award winner for Best Original Screenplay, Get Out is a brutally honest take on racism in American society.
Dir. Jennifer Kent. Austrailia, 2014, 94 mins. With Essie Davis, Noah Wiseman, Hayley McElhinney, Daniel Henshall, Barbara West. Six years after the violent death of her husband, Amelia (Davis) struggles to discipline her uncontrollable 6-year-old son, Samuel (Wiseman), whose dreams are plagued by a monster he believes is coming to kill them both. When a disturbing children’s storybook turns up at their house, Samuel is convinced that the Babadook is the creature he’s been dreaming about—but it’s Amelia who proves most susceptible to the monster’s evil. Though its titular character was reclaimed as an amusing queer Internet meme, the film remains an elegantly terrifying work of contemporary horror.
