Shirley: Visions of Reality
With an illustrated conversation by Gustav Deutsch and Hanna Schimek, moderated by Christopher Zimmerman (Austrian Cultural Forum) followed by a reception
Dir. Gustav Deutsch. 2013, 92 mins. DCP. With Stephanie Cumming, Christoph Bach. Thirteen paintings by Edward Hopper are brought stunningly to life in this dazzling visual feast. Masterfully recreating the colors and textures of the artist’s work Deutsch connects the meticulously rendered tableaux with a narrative that spans the myriad social upheavals of mid-twentieth century America, from the Depression to the civil rights movement. Blown up to big-screen proportions and radically re-contextualized, Hopper’s iconic images are given new meaning in this mesmerizing cinematic experiment. The screenings and conversation will be followed by a reception sponsored by the Austrian Cultural Forum and Deutsches Haus.
